Gambling Counselling Services For Hawke's Bay
Hawke’s Bay Gambling Services is funded by the Ministry of Health to provide free gambling counselling and health promotion services to all communities within the wider Hawke’s Bay region including Wairoa, Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay.
The Beginning
Te Rangihaeata Oranga Trust began in the year 2000 by Monica Stockdale. She has been involved in establishing treatment services to work with those with alcohol, drug and gambling addictions for over 35 years.
While working in the drug and alcohol space, Monica noticed the impact gambling was having on whânau here in Hawkes Bay. She soon realised that those a little more desperate for money can be so easily tricked into gambling by just one win. That was enough for some to be quickly hooked to gambling.
This motivated Monica to address the growing gambling harm here in Hawkes Bay. She explored funding to begin a service with reluctance from the gaming industry. She persevered for over 3 years working from the boot of her car to eventually begin our service Te Rangihaeata Oranga Trust – Gambling Recover Service HB.
Our service started in 2000, aiming to prevent and minimise gambling harm.
